How to prevent and get rid of cellulite
Understanding the causes of cellulite is the first step to preventing and eliminating cellulite from your life.
“Cottage cheese skin”, as it is commonly called, is often thought to be a product of obesity; this is a fallacy. Many people who are of average weight or even underweight suffer from cellulite. It is a phenomenon most commonly found in females because one of the major contributing factors is estrogen. For this reason, young women begin to see cellulite as they experience puberty; this is often exacerbated by taking Birth Control pills which have high estrogen contents.
Other contributing factors include diets high in fat, carbs, salt and alcohol, or low in fiber. Smoking, stress and a lack of physical exercise have also been found to be contributors to cellulite. Water metabolism may also affect cellulite. Those of us who have desk jobs and spend a great amount of time sitting may notice the initiation or worsening of cellulite. Women who wear tight clothes and high heels may also find their cellulite increasing in severity.
Cellulite is, in most cases, present before being visible; therefore, even if it does not look like you have dimples on your thighs, you may still have the initial stages of cellulite and any of the above contributing factors may cause the cellulite to appear. If you have cellulite, and you do not make changes to your lifestyle, the situation could become uncomfortable and even painful.
There are many theories on how to get rid of cellulite, ranging from therapy or surgery to special creams. Unfortunately, there is very little evidence that any of these methods are a surefire way to rid your body of the bumps and grooves. However, now that you know what the causes are you can take the steps to decrease the effects. A healthy diet and exercise routine will not only reduce your body’s fat content, but will also prepare your body to combat stress and anxiety better. Lowering your salt intake will help metabolize water properly and may decrease the severity of your cellulite. If you have a desk job, make sure to move around as often as possible. Try not to wear clothing that is tight around the potential problem areas, and rotate your footwear so that you are not only wearing high heels.
Some personal old wives tales’ that I incorporate into my routine but have no scientific evidence of success include: using a loofah or shower scrub with a firming body wash over areas prone to cellulite; using vitamin E body butter; and strength training and stretching focusing on my upper thighs.
The answer to most physical irregularities is leading a healthy lifestyle, but maintaining a realistic body image is also important. If you have cellulite, always remember that so does just about every other female that you associate with.
